John Kello

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Grand Value Drugs. We found them through a customer service cold call.

Where did you find your first employee?
Our first official employee is our director of operations, Karen Dabish.  I'd known Karen long before and thought she was a good fit with her background in regulator research for GlaxoSmith Kline & Pfizer. She also had an artistic bent having just graduated from the Center for Creative Studies. She's a lifer.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
No. However, we are currently looking to hire1-2 interns for graphic design and marketing assistance.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
We've self-funded the start-up through the first 10 months. We're looking at the possibility of raising funds to accelerate our expansion. We'll take our time picking the right strategic partner. We'll look for funding as well as management expertise in our space.

What are some of the advantages to do business here?
It may be a surprise to a few people, but Michigan has very strong talent in the market. That includes everything from sales and marketing to IT. With the market being down as it is, we've been fortunate to find some very talented folks to help us grow the company. The other big advantage has been the state's statues, which allow our business to operate in a very regulated space.

If you could change one thing about this region, what would it be?
Although we have a dedicated workforce, I'd like to see more entrepreneurial ventures move from the planning stages to execution. We're seeing more and more of these opportunities through collaborations such as Tech Town & Ann Arbor SPARK. I'm excited to see the fruits of the foundation that these organizations and others have planted.
