What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
The team members of uRefer attend local business development and educational events (recent ones include TED, Ann Arbor Ad Club, FutureMidwest). We also collaborate with other local startups and local business leaders and have met extensively with University of Michigan faculty and students.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
American Laser Skincare, previously American Laser Centers.

Where did you find your first employee?
Mike Burba joined the uRefer team in 2007 and successfully launched the first version of the product. He has been responsible for the product platform and for all aspects of making clients successful since that time. Mike has experience in all aspects of the software business having led product development, product management, marketing and sales for software companies. He possesses a unique perspective that combines user needs and the development of technology solutions to address those needs. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
Yes, once. Nick Mekas started with uRefer as an intern when he was still in school at the University of Michigan. Once he graduated we brought him on full time.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
Angel investors have provided most of the funding for uRefer. We are close to closing our first round of institutional funding, but are unable to reveal the investor at this time.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
Ann Arbor is a great community to start a business in because of all the available resources and support. We would advice new business owners to dive in and take advantage of what we have here from U-M to the amazing startup community that exists here.

What do you see in Metro Detroit that other people who live outside the area don't?
This is a great place to live, work and play. Despite what many people see on TV, Metro Detroit has a lot going. Our technology and creative communities are thriving and working together to turn Detroit and the surrounding areas back into place known for innovation, business and culture.
