XFX Studio Web Development

102 North Ave
Mt. Clemens, MI 48043

Dan Wimpari

What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
XFX Studio Web Development has long been a member of the Microsoft Partner Network. We are members of the Mac Developer Program and are in the process of applying for the Google Engage for Agencies program.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
I believe our first customer was Tug-No-More, makers of a hands-free dog harness system. That customer was referred to XFX Studio by an acquaintance that was familiar with our company and the work we produce. Since then, I believe that approximately 90 percent of our business is referral based either directly or by competitors of our current clients.

Where did you find your first employee?
Our first employee was a friend that was doing work independently for local bands. We were really impressed by the visual aesthetic of his websites, so we asked if he wanted to work with XFX Studio.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
That first employee was initially brought on as a sort of pseudo intern, which later turned into a full-time position. That was the only time this has occurred. We have had a hard time finding interns and employees that are knowledgeable both in terms of functional programming and graphic design, which is a necessity with a firm like ours where everyone wears many hats.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
Initially, we found start-up capital in the form of corporate credit cards from multiple national institutions. Currently, we are considering exploring other private avenues to fund a couple of large-scale projects we would like to pursue.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
Diversity and ingenuity, southeastern Michigan is packed with such a wide variety of industries, that XFX Studio has had the opportunity to do projects for companies that run the gamut from hair salons, to manufacturing companies, to municipalities, to automotive companies and start-ups of various flavors. Combine that with the fact that each and every one of these companies has a great idea of how they can utilize the web in a unique way to facilitate their business needs. It makes it a great environment for a company like XFX Studio, that offers such a comprehensive set of services to meet their needs.

If you could change one thing about this region, what would it be?
Though the region is getting a lot better in terms of organizations for start-ups and incubation, it is still a bit fragmented with Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties having their own separate entities. As many new businesses start as an idea, the entrepreneur may have little to no idea where to find funding or programs to help get them started. I believe it would be a lot easier for startups to take advantage of services available if the organizations were to sponsor joint events where entrepreneurs can get a full view of what is available to them in a one-stop shop.
