What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
I have a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Detroit-Mercy. I am also a member of the Entrepreneurs' Organization, a peer to peer organization that is building the world's most influential community of entrepreneurs. It is now over 7500 members strong in 38 countries, with over 100 members in the Detroit community.

Where did you find your first employee?
Networking from our board members.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
Yes, we have hired several interns, three of whom we ended up hiring full time.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
Finding capital was a problem. The banks were not interested in an unproven start-up and the venture capitalists and angel fund investors wanted too much in return for their money. We ended up funding the business organically, both with personal funds and company revenues. The company has grown at a slower pace, but we feel we have more control over our destiny.

What could local leaders do to help attract and retain more entrepreneurial young people to Metro Detroit?
Be bold and grow their business. Innovate and create jobs that have a future. Many of our young people are looking for a career but feel that they can't because the job market is unstable. We need to be excited about our future here in Detroit and we need to impart that excitement onto the next generation of Detroit business innovators and leaders.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
Get connected with other business owners – either within their own industry or within their community. There is a real fraternal feeling amongst business owners, who understand that it can be a lonely place at the top, and most are willing to help with advice, contacts, and support that can save many hours of time from a learning curve perspective, and provide confidence and support when times get tough.
