Christian Marcillo

What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
We have participated in FastTrac New Venture 10-week course, SCORE mentorship, Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center day workshops and Accounting 101 at Walsh College.

Where did you find your first employee?
When we, Christian and Glen, began the company it was during the lowest part of the Michigan economy. Several of our friends and former co-workers knew we were up to something and approached us and stated that they wanted in. We had our first team up and running at our first company meeting three weeks later with 13 interested people.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
We are currently bringing on interns through the Michigan Works program, and we look forward to promoting their status in the near future.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Compuware, we were introduced through our network.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
Friends and family have helped to maintain the bootstrap principal. Now that growth is occurring more so we are seeking capital through Charter One, CHASE, and a few other programs. Also an incredible opportunity was the Pontiac Rise of the Phoenix program in which we are able to operate rent free for a year to grow our additional business.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
Doing business in a downtown area, such as historic downtown Pontiac, gives us incredible neighbors and access to resources locally. It also lets us draw on creative energy of being able to create an environment to work that inspires creative design, development, and conversations. Being connected within the loop of Woodward and drawing from the history of Woodward, Metro Detroit, and downtown Pontiac connects us even more so to our community.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
Specifically in downtown Pontiac there is incredible growth happening with 57 new businesses opening up. That start-up energy is contagious. Secondly, the support groups such as SCORE and MI-SBTDC provide incredible resources to practice the elements of success for your business.
