New Century Career Center pushes sustainable jobs on east side

The New Century Career Center wants to take people with old economy talents and retrofit them with the skill sets needed for the sustainability-oriented jobs of the 21st Century.

The newly established low-profit center on the east side will train construction workers, contractors and developers on how to take advantage of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies. The five-person operation plans to begin its first class in geothermal heating and cooling next week. It hopes to educate 150-200 people this year.

"Our target is individuals who are workers in transition or people who want to add to their skill set," says Jeremy Eckhous, school director for the New Century Career Center. "We want to work with the job potential these people have."

The New Century Career Center will focus on teaching how to install and operate renewable energy technology, such as solar panels of geothermal fields. It will also offer a full-slate of energy efficiency classes and strategies to maximize Metro Detroit's built environment.

"There is an enormous and growing opportunity to retrofit and weatherize our built environment," Eckhous says.

The New Century Career Center is located on 8300 E. Jefferson Ave, Suite 507. For information on the classes, contact Eckhous at [email protected] or 877-822-5230.
