Tom Ludlam

What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
None at this early stage, but are eager to learn more and take advantage of opportunities that can benefit our business.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Molecular Imaging Research has been providing in vivo preclinical imaging services since its original inception in 2003. With the re-launch of the business in late April, MIR had 22 active imaging projects with 13 customers, carried over from projects initiated under prior ownership. The company services the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical devices industries.

Where did you find your first employee?
Thirteen of MIR's 14 employees are scientists and technicians who have carried over from prior ownership. Many of the staff were scientists at Pfizer's Ann Arbor office. As a result, the company has a skilled and highly experienced team.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
The company has hired and promoted interns under prior ownership on a few occasions in the past and would hope to continue that practice going forward.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
The relaunch of MIR is supported by a Series A investment from Baird Venture Partners and Arcus Ventures.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
The Ann Arbor area offers an excellent pool of talent for employment, has a solid academic infrastructure and a growing entrepreneurial spirit.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
Do it. Despite all the economic challenges of the last few years, this area has a welcoming environment, eager to support new business development. Make sure to reach out to the community. Lots of resources and the reception will be very good.
