Tom Carmichael

What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
We have received help from the MEDC, 21st Century Jobs Fund, Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition, and various Oakland County and southeast Michigan small business promotion organizations like, the Macomb-OU INCubator program at Oakland University, Automation Alley Alternative Energy Symposium, and Wayne State University's TechTown.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Our first customer was Duo-Gard Industries based in Canton. We found them through an Internet search for custom-day-lighting leaders in southeast Michigan.

Where did you find your first employee?
We found them locally, through personal contacts.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
Not at this time. We need to grow a bit more before we can have a full-fledged internship program.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
We have used personal funds as well as a SBA approved commercial loan from PNC Bank (formerly National City Bank).

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
First and foremost is infrastructure. Southeast Michigan has a great industrial base and very talented and experienced people.

If you could change one thing about this region, what would it be?
The image of Detroit as a whole.
