What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
I have a business management degree from Eastern Michigan University
Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
We joined the Construction Association of Michigan
which has an online plan room that posts bid opportunities. We bid a bunch of work and got our first project.
Where did you find your first employee?
I have hired well over 500 people by posting ads on Craigslist
in the past 8 years.
Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
I have done this at least 20 times.
Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
We have borrowed $10 million from United Bank and Trust, University Bank, United Bank and Trust, Chase Bank, Citizens Bank, Flagstar Bank, etc.
What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
All of Beal Inc's companies get a lot of work from university and public school systems. We are lucky to have some of the biggest and the best schools in the entire country.
It's often said that Metro Detroit and Michigan need to reinvent their economies to be competitive. Are we making those changes, and if so are we making enough of them or doing it fast enough?
Metro Detroit's problems are extremely complex. We need both new companies and we need communities that are desirable to live in so that our new companies can attract and retain talent. For Detroit in particular I really see that coming together for downtown. It seems like there is more going on in Downtown Detroit right now than in the past 30 years combined. When I first started Beal Inc. our construction contracting firm we did little work in the City of Detroit, but the past three years have been completely different. Over the past 3 years we have done most of our work in Detroit and in downtown in particular.
