What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
I have participated in TechTown's SmartStart program.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corp ordered our first "Community 2.0" custom website. This came from a long-standing relationship in the community I volunteered and eventually lived in.

Where did you find your first employee?
Through relationships that developed as I volunteered in the community.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
Actually, my star communications manager, Jackie Heiss, was an intern for one of our clients, March of Dimes, last year and when she graduated, I had to get her on board having seen what a competent and talented young professional she was. This is the first time this has happened in our company.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
Detroit Micro Enterprise Fund, TechTown and a few friends and family have provided a small portion of the funding to get to this point. Most of the money needed has come from personal resources and my other company, RecycleMax, Inc. This continues to be very challenging and disappointing area, as I see it.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
The ability to get to the top decision makers of our region and state to make an idea happen, low costs and lots of people and organizations willing to cheer you on.

If you could change one thing about this region, what would it be?
I often think that we don't realize how much power we have as individuals, organizations and a community to do something really profound and even help change the world. Maybe we've had so many years getting beat up or beating ourselves up. Unfortunately, this play-it-safe attitude limits our ability to work together and transform Metro Detroit into a world-class place to live, work and play.
