John Carter

What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
I have a long standing relationship with the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Centers in Macomb and Oakland Counties. As a counselor, I have served hundreds of new business owners. My first client was a client from the Macomb County center.

Where did you find your first employee and have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
I found my first employee through another attorney/friend, and I generally will hire interns as part or full time if the work load warrants and they are proven to be worthy.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
As a start-up myself, I never borrowed money or capital to start my practice. I started slow and built the practice over time with my own savings and resources.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
I think the greatest advantage of doing business in southeast Michigan is the dedication and work ethic of those that are self employed (the people). Most people have good skill sets and business instincts, what they lack is a framework and resources (professional and financial) to succeed.

If you could change one thing about this region, what would it be?
The one thing I would change is the poor PR that the state and southeast Michigan gets as a result of the city of Detroit. I think that there is a lot of innovation and creativity in Michigan, however, we need to continue to be recognized as a hotbed for innovation and talent for high growth industries outside of auto or manufacturing. However, I do think advance manufacturing will still be the answer for Michigan's success.
