Joe Steele

What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
I'm exploring every opportunity I can, by joining chambers of commerce and attending as many networking events as possible. This region has some amazing, smart people and I am working to try to meet as many as I can.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
The opportunity here is tremendous. The state of Michigan and the Detroit area in particular have had a rough decade. Now, however, we are seeing a recommitment to invest in the region so there are great stories to be told. That is what we do, we tell our clients stories to the audiences that matter most to them, so I am looking forward to telling the Detroit story.

What could local leaders do to help attract and retain more entrepreneurial young people to Metro Detroit?
I think we need to understand that just because we have been operating a certain way for a long time does not mean it is the right way. If younger people here are given the freedom to take some risks and work in a way that may be outside of the way businesses have traditionally operated, we might see some great things emerge and that younger talent may stay here to help grow our state.

What do you see in Metro Detroit that other people who live outside the area don't?
First of all, this is home and I cannot imagine living anywhere else. Secondly, I think it is helpful that those of us who live and work in that area aren't jaded by what we have seen in the national media about the, as Time magazine put it, "Tragedy of Detroit." We all know the area is struggling and we aren't going to deny that, but we also know that there is tremendous promise here and not coming in with those preconceived notions will help is build up and expand those bright spots like Corktown, Midtown and the New Center area.

What is one thing Michigan does better or has going for it that other more successful regional economies don't?
Michigan has awesome resources, not the least of which is the people who live here. We have been through things over the last 10-15 years that no other state has gone through and are working to reinvent ourselves on the fly. Sure, there have been people who have moved out of the state, and I don't think many of them did so by choice. But the people who are still here are battle tested and are ready for what's next. That is what I am excited about. I am looking forward to working with my fellow Michigander to take Michigan into its next phase and make us the envy of the country.
