What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
None to date. I compare best practices among our portfolio companies.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Our first investment was in American Education Group in July 2009.

Where did you find your first employee?
We had two employees move from Chicago to establish the firm and then proceeded to hire four individuals from the Metro Detroit market.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
Glencoe Capital attracts the best and brightest financial services employees from across the Midwest. Several of our employees have, over time, been promoted internally throughout the company.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
As a private-equity firm, Glencoe seeks investors to engage in limited partnerships with our various funds during capital raises. These investors include charitable trusts, institutional investors, foundations, corporate and public pension funds, insurance companies, banks, and endowments funds, just to name a few.

What are some of the advantages to doing business here?
Glencoe has a commitment in investing in Michigan-based companies. We believe significant opportunities exist to invest meaningfully in small- and-lower middle market companies in Michigan. As an investor for the state of Michigan's Retirement System through its Michigan Opportunities Fund, we want to buy and grow companies in our state that have the potential for long-term, sustained growth. We believe Metro Detroit has the trained workforce necessary for good companies to grow over the long-term, along with plenty of entrepreneurial drive to make great ideas come to life.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
Glencoe Capital really only purchases companies that want to go from good to great. We only affiliate ourselves with businesses that have a detailed business plan with the potential for growth. A business that we would consider acquiring would have an outstanding management team, profitable operations, and a growth oriented operational plan.

What do you see in Metro Detroit that other people who live outside the area don't?
Since 1993, our founder, David Evans, has been absolutely committed to growing companies throughout our state, with a real eye on opportunities in the Metro Detroit area. One of our portfolio companies, Moosejaw, is headquartered in Madison Heights. Although we always look to acquire businesses that are already on their way to establishing themselves long-term throughout the state, we believe the business climate in southeast Michigan is becoming increasingly conducive to making additional investments for the Michigan Opportunities Fund in the future.
