Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
While I'll always be grateful to all those who've given me the privilege of serving them, I don't remember who my very first client was. I have always been fortunate that my clients came from referrals.

Where did you find your first employee?
The hallway mirror.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
I have always been ultra frugal about spending money to grow my business. I've been fortunate that I could reinvest earnings to grow The Benefits Edge. I haven't needed to get any financing for this business.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about opening a business here?
Don't be afraid of it, but be realistic. Clients are rarely as anxious to buy your products as you are to sell them. Things always take longer than you plan. Be conservative, be positive and be persistent. Deliver service beyond expectation and appreciate every kindness and opportunity.

What do you see in Metro Detroit that other people who live outside the area don't?
The people I get to spend time with daily are strong, positive people. They are not about waiting for the storm to pass, but about learning to dance in the rain.
