What educational, entrepreneurial or business development programs, if any, have you taken advantage of?
Strategic Staffing Solutions has an aggressive education benefits package with tuition reimbursement, grants toward completion of certificates, work-related education programs and free computer-based training.

We also have the Strategic Staffing Solutions University, which is an on-boarding program that trains new employees and/or team members who are changing their position within the company on our standards and best practices. This is followed by ongoing mentoring and training, including an annual meeting where every member of Strategic Staffing Solutions' leadership team is flown from across the globe to Detroit for a week-long seminar of training and recognition.

All of our educational and development practices underscore our strong commitment and support to life-long learning and advanced education.

Who was your first customer and where did you find them?
Our first customer was E & L Transport. I knew the CIO at the time and when I told him I was starting Strategic Staffing Solutions he said, "I'll be your first customer."

Where did you find your first employee?
Strategic Staffing Solutions started more than 20 years ago with three employees, including me. One of our first employees was David Fox who is still part of our team today as a Director with the company.

Have you promoted an intern to employee status, and if so how many times have you done it?
Yes. We have done it at least 20 times in our main corporate office and many more times in our branches in the U.S. and Europe.

Where have you turned to find capital to grow your company and which institutions have provided it?
Having a firm relationship with a strong financial institution has been an important part of our continuing success. We have a strong relationship with a major financial institution that has provided key financing when we needed it to successfully implement a series of expansions and acquisitions that put us where we are today. Their continued faith in and support of Strategic Staffing Solutions has been important to our ability to expand to more than 20 locations in 20 years with 20 consecutive years of growth.

Name an idea, policy or mindset from elsewhere that you would like to see this region adopt?
Strategic Staffing Solutions' international operations are based in Vilnius, Lithuania. We opened there 10 years ago after our team met with local business and civic leaders and discovered that the Baltic Region was a budding technology hub. The experience of working with this region to expand their position as a world leader in technology has provided our team valuable insights that we are bringing to Michigan and our other locations. Their industrious mid set and local policies that support business growth could be adopted in our region and would yield amazing results.

What do you see in Metro Detroit that other people who live outside the area don't?
Strategic Staffing Solutions is an international business, so I have the opportunity to speak to a lot of people globally about why our business is headquartered in Detroit. As an entrepreneur, as chair of the Downtown Detroit Partnership and as a member of both the board and the Executive Committee of Business Leaders for Michigan, I have the desire and responsibility to share what I see in Detroit with business, civic and community leaders in other locations. I am always pleased to hear people speak positively of the talent Metro Detroit possesses, but what they don't know, and I often share, are opportunities people have in other states and countries to access our talent and the benefits of investing in our region.

Our Detroit Development Center is an excellent example of this. The DDC is an application development center that opened in Downtown Detroit last April to service our first anchor customer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The Strategic Staffing Solutions team has been sharing this opportunity to other customers nationally and the response has been very positive. We now have several companies in-sourcing IT work to our Center in Detroit instead of to offshore locations and our workforce in the center has quadrupled to more than 200 since it opened.

What is one thing Michigan does better or has going for it that other more successful regional economies don't?
Michigan has benefitted from having some of the greatest entrepreneurial minds of our time. Names like Ford, Durant, Kellogg, Post, Gerber and Dow are all the names of Michigan entrepreneurs who became known world-wide. I believe we have a new corps of entrepreneurs, including our new governor, who can spark the same growth and innovation in the 21st Century that the earlier ones did in the 19th and 20th Centuries. We have a class of professionals that have been trained to create from scratch and, in the midst of our reviving economy, we are demonstrating to the world that we can still execute in this manner today. As the Strategic Staffing Solutions team travels across the nation and overseas, we meet hundreds of very smart people, but I believe Michigan's people have an inventive spirit and talent that is very unique to our state.
