High Growth Happy Hour - Rocket Fiber

Southeast Michigan Startup is pleased to announce our next High Growth Happy Hour focused on one of Detroit's fast growing companies, and the city's fastest internet provider, Rocket Fiber. 
Rocket Fiber is a Detroit-based internet service provider dedicated to bringing affordable gigabit internet and an industry-leading, personalized client experience to residents and businesses in Detroit. Rocket Fiber’s newly built fiber backbone is designed to transform the way Rocket Fiber clients create, collaborate, and communicate. 
Co-founder and CEO Marc Hudson and co-founder and COO Edi Demaj will share how they raised over $30 million in investment from billionare Dan Gilbert to launch a new broadband company, how they are disrupting industry standards, and how they are actively scaling an innovative tech startup across Detroit. 
About Marc Hudson 

In January 2013, Marc co-founded what would eventually become Rocket Fiber with partners Randy Foster and Edi Demaj. He has seven years of experience in software design and engineering and has been involved in startups for the majority of the last 10 years. At Rocket Fiber, Marc focuses on product development and external relationships with Rocket Fiber partners in the Detroit business, civic, and philanthropic communities. 
About Edi Demaj  

Edi is the co-founder and COO of Rocket Fiber. As the operations lead of Rocket Fiber, Edi is responsible for helping with the execution of the Rocket Fiber vision by bridging the gap between technology, product, and other areas within the company. In addition to helping shape the vision of Rocket Fiber, he helps oversee negotiations and management of various vendors and clients. Prior to moving to Rocket Fiber full time, Edi worked for Bedrock Real Estate in Detroit, part of the Quicken Loans and Rock Ventures family of companies, and has co-founded severa tech and real estate companies.

High Growth Happy Hour - Mobility

High Growth Happy Hour, presented by Southeast Michigan Startup and the New Economy Initiative, is a monthly series of intimate conversations with entrepreneurs who are scaling startups in the region. This month, we're talking mobility -- the movement of goods and people -- and will hear from two women founders: Tatiana Grant, co-founder of Flash Delivery, and Anya Babit, founder & CEO of SPLT. Join us for this special conversation on Tuesday, October 256-8 p.m., at the Traffic Jam & Snug restaurant in Midtown Detroit.

About Tatiana Grant  
Tatiana Grant is a metro-Detroit native who has had the entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, starting with a Kool-Aid stand that expanded to a home business of doing hair and nails all before she was 10. After a stint in the corporate world, she launched her own public relations and event planning company, Infused PR & Events, which has clients including Duggan for Detroit and Crain's Detroit Business. In 2014, Tatiana co-founded Flash Delivery, a mobile technology food and grocery delivery service for Detroit residents, which is now expanding in metro Detroit. Tatiana is a recent Crain's 20 in the 20s recipient and was named the "Next Gen: Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce.

About Anya Babbitt
Anya Babbitt is Founder & CEO of SPLT, a ridesharing platform with the goal of bringing accessible and reliable mobility to everyone. Anya has started multiple businesses, successfully exiting one, and has experience in enterprise sales, strategic partnerships, corporate communications, sustainability, and product design. Since 2014, Anya has devoted her full attention to the emerging field of social and environmental sustainability. SPLT has been recognized in TechCrunch and Forbes and was selected as a Regional Finalist for Hult Prize (Clinton Global Iniative) and winner of the 100K Clean Energy Trust Prizker Prize. Anya was recently named one of Crain's Detroit Business's "40 under 40."
Anya is also co-developer of the Smart City Start­up Consortium, with SPLT being one of five startups working to connect public and private resources to help all American cities become smart cities.

Southeast Michigan Startup is pleased to announce our next High Growth Happy Hour focused on two innovative real estate companies that are scaling in Detroit. 

Detroit's rapidly fluctuating real estate market has no shortage of entrepreneurs breaking into it. Join David Alade of Century Partners, a real estate development company with a holistic revitalization and innovative funding approach, and Max Nussenbaum CEO & Co-founder of property management startup Castle. David and Max will share insights into Detroit's real estate market, including how they have broken in and created a new model for their businesses, and how they are growing.

About David Alade

David Alade is a born and raised New Yorker. After graduating with a degree in Urban Studies and Economics from Columbia University in 2009, he pursued a career on Wall Street where he focused on providing an array of secured financing solutions for consumer finance companies. During his six years in investment banking at Barclays Capital and Credit Suisse, David facilitated over $100Billion in financing for mid-size to Fortune 500 companies, including tens of billions of dollars of financing for the finance arms of the Big 3 U.S. auto companies. In the summer of 2014, David fell in love with the charismatic energy burning within the city of Detroit and began financially investing in its neighborhoods. David moved to Detroit in May 2015 to focus on community advocacy and real estate development in Detroit’s urban neighborhoods on a full-time basis.

About Max Nussenbaum 

Max is originally from Newton, Massachusetts. He graduated form Wesleyan University in 2012 with a double major in English and government. After graduation, Max moved to Detroit as part of Venture for America's inaugural class and spent two years working at tech startup Are You a Human? In 2014, Max started Castle with friends Scott Lowe and Tim Dingman. Castle helps manage rental properties for landlords using automation and on-demand labor.

How to Scale Smart

How to Scale Smart is a panel discussion that will cover the basics you need to build a company ready to grow big from the beginning. A diverse group of entrepreneurs who are scaling will shrae insight on prepping for growth from the very early stages (ie entity structure, law, partners / strategic hires, growth / sales strategies, etc). Panelists include Duran Davis, Founder & CEO of LavLabs, Amy Swift, Founder of Building Hugger, and Paul Mersino & Geaneen Arends of Butzel Long, and Justin Anderson of Solidea Capital.

We're welcoming a special out of town guest Sean Ammirati, serial entrepreneur and investor, along with local entrepreneur Jason Raznick Founder & CEO of Benzinga in Downtown Detroit.

Both Jason and Sean have had fascinating journeys scaling in the world of media and technology. Jason Raznick previously founded two successful internet companies prior to Benzinga, a financial technology media company. In the first five months, Benzinga grew to over 50k active members. Benzinga currently serves over 3 million readers in over 125 countries each month and has been featured in CNBC, Fox Business, NPR and Wall Street Journal.

Sean Ammirati joined Birchmere Ventures as a partner in 2012. Prior to that, he spent a dozen years founding, building and selling businesses in the software and media industries. Sean was previously Chief Operating Officer of ReadWriteWeb, one of the most influential sites about the future of technology and innovation. In December 2011, the company was acquired by SAY Media to strengthen its technology channel. Sean was previously co-founder and CEO of mSpoke, which was the first acquisition of LinkedIn. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon University and author of the upcoming book The Science of Growth (St. Martins April 2016).
